Basement Waterproofing Systems Improve Life and Home Value

Basement Waterproofing Systems

Nothing breaks your heart faster than to remodel a basement into a comfy living space only to have it ruined by ground water from heavy rains.  Whether you’re moving into a new home or refurbishing your current home, if that home has a basement, you need to look into basement waterproofing systems.

Basements flood because ground water outside the home forces its way into your home through the joints or cracks between the footer, wall, and floor or through the wall itself.  If not properly sealed from the outside (something few home builders do adequately) water will find its way into your basement.  Even a little water will make a damp, musty smell that is hard to get rid of.

The common solution to water in the basement is a sump pump mounted in a pit at the lowest corner of the basement floor.  As long as the pump operates and power is available, this will keep standing water from building up in your basement, but the water will still flow across the floor to get to the sump pump.  Imagine if you’ve installed carpeting on that floor!

The best way to solve a wet basement problem is to install a Grate drain  and GrateSump system with a power backup unit. This involves cutting a trench in the floor along the walls, installing a perforated drain line, and adding a sump pump every 120 linear feet.  This will stop all groundwater seepage coming up through the footer joint.

Your walls may need repairs as well.  Making those repairs during drain installation will save you considerably on the total cost.  Because these projects involve the structural integrity of your home, these are not D.I.Y. projects: use a professional.

If your basement already has a musty smell, the professionals at Select Basement Waterproofing Systems can remove it so your new living environment will be a pleasant place to spend time.
